STANFORD, CA.---Former Cardinal Charmin Smith has been named Stanford's new assistant women's basketball coach as announced by head coach Tara VanDerveer on Friday.

"We are very excited to have Charmin on our staff," VanDerveer said. "She is an extremely intelligent player and a very hard worker. She will be a great addition to the Stanford program."

Smith helped Boston College to one of its most successful seasons in program history as an assistant coach for the Eagles last season. Boston College took its first Big East Conference title, received their highest seed (No. 3) heading into the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Mideast Regional Semifinals before falling to Minnesota.

While at Stanford (1993-97), Smith was a member of Cardinal squads that won three Pacific-10 Conference Championships and made three NCAA Final Four appearances. She is tied for first in the Stanford recordbooks for games played in a season (36) and stands at No. 10 with 123 career games played.

She graduated from Stanford in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in civil and environmental engineering, and received her master of science degree from Stanford in 2000 (also in civil and environmental engineering).

Smith, a St. Louis, Mo. native, was a professional basketball player for four years (1999-2002), seeing time with both the Seattle Storm and Minnesota Lynx of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She spent a year in the Swedish Basketball League (2003).
In addition, Smith served as a team spokesperson for the Seattle Storm, and was integral in the "Stormin' the Sound" initiative, a program of speaking to children and adult groups. She also spent two seasons as a production assistant and editor with NBA Entertainment, where she aided in the video editing and compiling efforts of several national NBA broadcasts.
