MAPLEWOOD, NEW JERSEY ---Sizzling
Singh continues to pick up the hardware and big check, and in the
process, defend his number one ranking by winning the Bell Canadian
Open Championship for his seventh tour victory of the 2004 season.
Vijay won/survived by when he birdied the 18th hole in regulation
play to force a playoff against good friend and native son of Canada,
Mike Weir. Throughout the final round, it seemed that no one wanted
to win as each golfer squandered opportunities. During the second
playoff hole Vijay missed a par putt opening the door for Weir,
but Mike’s attempt slid by on the high side. The miss was
indicative of Mike’s disastrous play up until that point,
and indicative of what was to come. It was on the third playoff
hole that Vijay was able to claim the title when Weir’s third
shot found the water, ending Weir’s dream of capturing his
nation’s championship. For his efforts, Singh deposits $810,000
dollars bring his total golf winnings to $8.7 million as he closes
in on Tiger’s record of $9.1 million. The victory also positions
Vijay to make a run at Tiger’s record of nine wins in a season.
With the amount of money being made on the tour, mothers and fathers,
raise your sons and daughters to be golfers.
Throughout the day, Mike Weir, who started the day with a three
stroke lead over Vijay, played reasonably well, but perhaps the
pressure of the moment, carrying the hopes all of Canada proved
to be too much. As he said in the post tournament press conference
“It was a difficult day out there to be sure, and when I look
back, I guess that maybe I was trying too hard. I might have been
pressing a little bit, trying to make things happen. ” Weir
made sure to credit Vijay when he said “I also want to give
full credit to Vijay. He’s a good friend and he’s deserving
of being the No. 1 player in the world. He’s having a heck
of a year and he’s a great champion of the Bell Canadian Open.”
As for Vijay, he was happy with the win though somewhat appeared
to subdue his enthusiasm in light of the way the tournament ended
and as he replied to a question by saying, “Someone had to
win.”
Vijay is expected to play in perhaps as many as five more tournaments
before the end of the year. Golf fans are advised to watch Singh,
because right now, no one is hotter that the sizzling Singh.
