The Weekly/BSPIN Sports News 2000: Metroplex All-Area Volleyball Team
Distributed by BSPIN Sports News

DALLAS, TEXAS — Speed, quickness and jumping ability highlight the third edition of The Weekly/BSPIN Metroplex All-Area Volleyball team. Two-time Player of the Year, Ashley Robinson, has gone on to play basketball at the University of Tennessee for Pat Summit.

But there is hardly a talent drain. There are six returning players from the 1999 BSPIN Sports News team: Renita Davidson, Stefani Eddins, Brittany Mason, Mercedes Posey, Antoinette Wadsworth, and Aisha Carr.

Heading the 2000 list is Longview Pinetree with Amber McCray and Tosha Jacobs as first team selections. The lethal duo led the Pirates to a 40-1 record and a second place finish in the state 4A tournament. Pinetree came within one match of making state history by becoming the first team to finish the season without losing a game or match. McCray, a 6-1 sophomore, was a member of the U.S. Youth National team, which won a gold medal in the Dominican Republic.

This year's Player of the Year is the high-jumping Aisha Carr of Dallas Skyline, who put down 325 kills for a Raiders team, which struggled through a rebuilding year. Carr, who received national attention playing for North Dallas Juniors, will play for Florida State next season and is the first DISD player in years to play big-time college volleyball.

Renita Davidson led the area in kills with 347 in leading Arlington High to the regional semifinals and a 36-6 record. She has signed to play volleyball for the University of Kansas.

South Grand Prairie Warrior Antoinette Wadsworth was an All-District selection and led her team in blocks and kills, and a district title. Wadsworth will be moving on to the University of Oklahoma to play basketball. The versatile senior is averaging 15.2 points a game for the Warriors.

Posey, who underwent knee surgery in June, led her team to a 26-15 record despite missing ten matches. She finished 11th in the area with 301 kills and was named All-SPC and the Metrocrest News Player of the Year.

The Weekly/BSPIN Sports News All-Area team honors outstanding African-American volleyball players from throughout North Texas for their, too often, overlooked achievements.
