A shortstop who also played third base, Horacio "Rabbit" Martinez played 13 seasons in the Negro Leagues with the New York Cubans (1935-36, 1939-47) and the Cuban All-Stars (1937-38). Along the way, he established himself as one of the best shortstops in his era.

Doing several interviews with Negro League ballplayers, no one’s goal was to ever see the Negro Leagues vanish, but there was the goal, to a man, to match up with the White ballplayers, whether it was on a Major League or Negro League field.

For fans of Negro League baseball, the summer of '42 was one of the most memorable seasons of all-time. The Kansas Monarchs dominated the West while in the East, the Homestead Grays outlasted the Baltimore Elite Giants to win the Negro National League.

As a child... I loved baseball cards, bubble gum, and my cousin Truman. I loved the 7th inning stretches, extra innings, and doubleheaders. I loved Little League, hotdogs and lacing up my cleats.
