NEW HAVEN, Ct. -- Like they have been most of the season and throughout the month of April, Bethune-Cookman remains the No. 1 team in HBCU baseball.
For the fourth straight week, the Wildcats (28-17) are atop the Black College Baseball.com weekly Top 10 poll.
BCC, who have already clinched their third straight regular season MEAC crown, were a unanimous choice in this week's poll as they garnered all 13 first-place votes and 130 points overall.
A pack of SWAC teams make up the remainder of this week's top five. Jackson State (33-15) is second followed by Southern University (23-14) at number three. Prairie View A&M (21-21) moved up from fifth to fourth while Alcorn State (20-10) dropped from fourth to fifth.
The top-ranked Wildcats, who went 3-2 during the week, were led by first baseman Osvaldo Torres. On the week, Torres led BCC in batting and fielding as he went 7-for-13 at the plate with seven runs and batting in nine RBI.
Torres also had a batting average of .538 last week while collecting a slugging percentage of 1.615 as he belted four home runs to up his number to eight (8) on the campaign.
Not to mention he had two doubles and two sacrifice fly balls.
He was also named BCB's player of the week, becoming the third Wildcat tabbed for that honor this season. In the field, Torres had 28 putouts from his first base position with no errors.
The rest of the BCB top ten includes North Carolina A&T (21-25) jumping from eighth to sixth, Grambling State (19-22) remains in seventh, Norfolk State (18-18) going from 10th to eighth, Savannah State (19-21) dropping from sixth to ninth, and Mississippi Valley State (14-20) going from ninth to 10th.
Key games on this weekend's schedule include North Carolina A&T at Coppin State, Southern at Prairie View A&M, Florida A&M at Norfolk State, and Jackson State at Alcorn State.
OTHER HONORS
Bethune Cookman's Hiram Burgos and Norfolk State's Joey Seal was named BCB's Co-Pitchers of The Week. The BCC righthander struck out a season-high nine batters against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore while only yielding one hit.
He kept his MEAC record clean at 5-0, and has not given up more than six hits in any outings in six consecutive starts on the hill. Burgos upped his record to 7-1 this week with his fifth consecutive victory.
As for Seal, he became NSU’s all-time career strikeout leader (251) with his 10-strikeout effort in a win over Maryland Eastern Shore. The righthander pitched his second complete game in that contest with his second-highest strikeout total of the season (10).
