NEW YORK -- For the second straight week, the Hornets of Delaware
State are the No. 1 team in black college football. However, the
jockeying for positions below them have seen several dramatic changes. How
so? How about Grambling State moving from sixth to third? Or Albany
State going from ninth to sixth? Those are just two of the major jumps
from last week's BoxToRow.com/BASN HBCU Top 10 Football Poll.
The
Hornets (5-1), who are tied with Norfolk State for the top spot in the
MEAC, were a unanimious choice as the top team in the land. Alabama
A&M (4-1), who was idle last weekend, moved up from No. 3 to No. 2.
The
aforementioned Tigers (5-1) from Grambling are third followed by SIAC
leading Tuskegee (6-0) and the Spartans of NSU (5-1) are fifth.
Thursday night, the Spartans will travel to Tallahasee to take on
Florida A&M in a key MEAC battle.
Also on
Thursday night, AAMU will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a pivotal SWAC
matchup. That game will be seen live on ESPNU beginning at 6:30 pm ET.
The Golden Lions lost to Grambling 30-24 this past weekend at Memorial
Stadium.
The rest of this week's bottom five
includes Albany State (6-1) at No. 6, Hampton drops from No. 2 to No.
7, Jackson State (4-2) makes its debut in the poll at No. 8. Southern
(5-2) who was defeated by JSU in Baton Rouge Saturday night falls from
No. 4 to No. 9, and Virginia Union (6-1) drops from seventh to tenth.
The
Golden Rams, fresh off a 17-14 win at Clark Atlanta, will host Tuskegee
Saturday night. The winner will most likely take control of the SIAC
race. Two other key HBCU conference games will be seen on ESPN this
weekend.
At Noon on ESPN Classic, Jackson
State will host Grambling State in a SWAC battle. Later on that evening
on ESPNU, Hampton will host South Carolina State. The 2 pm game at
Virginia will be shown on a tape-delayed basis with coverage beginning
at 10 pm.
Other games of note this weekend
will by Virginia Union hosting Bowie State in the Gold Bowl at Richmond
and Alcorn State traveling to Baton Rouge to take on the Jaguars of
Southern.
