Monfils moves on at the Open

NEW YORK (BASN) -- Gael Monfils continued his run at the U.S. Open Saturday afternoon beating Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia 7-6, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 before a packed crowd on the Grandstand court.

Tipsarevic had beaten Andy Roddick earlier in the week.

The match was played under very windy conditions and was marked by Tipsarevic calling for the trainer in the second set. The crowd was firmly behind Monfils.

The conditions notwithstanding, Monfils continued to play from well beyond the  baseline when he easily could have come in with his athleticism and taken many easy points from Tipsarevic.

It appears to be his career strategy. The match was played in 3 hours and 42 minutes. Monfils had a match high 17 aces.

He'll play fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet on Monday and will be a heavy favorite to advance to the round of 8, his best showing ever in a Grand Slam.
